About Alexander First Nation

Alexander First Nation, known in Cree as Kipohtakaw, is a Treaty 6 Cree Nation northwest of Edmonton, Alberta, guided by its motto "Culture, Community, People, Pride."

Kipohtakaw (ᑭᐳᐦᑕᑲᐤ) — Alexander First Nation, known in Cree as Kipohtakaw (ᑭᐳᐦᑕᑲᐤ), is a Cree Nation in Alberta and is party to Treaty 6. The Nation is named for its first chief, whose baptismal name was Alexandre. He signed an adhesion to Treaty 6 in 1877, and the main reserve was formed in 1882. The Nation is a member of the Yellowhead Tribal Council.

The main reserve sits about 40 kilometres northwest of Edmonton and borders Sturgeon County and Lac Ste. Anne County. The Nation describes its traditional territory as more than 8,000 hectares. It has three reserves:

  • Alexander 134, the main reserve
  • Alexander 134A, near Fox Creek
  • Alexander 134B, near Fort Assiniboine

Community life follows the motto "Culture, Community, People, Pride." The Nation works to preserve and revitalize its Cree language, traditional ceremonies and spiritual teachings. It offers weekly evening Cree classes and holds a Traditional Powwow every year. The Kipohtakaw Education Centre, modernized in 2024, focuses on Cree teachings and land-based learning. Environmental stewardship is a core value, and the Nation helps lead the regional Water Alliance.

Members can access health, social services, education and daycare programs. The Alexander Business Centre runs a gas station, a convenience store, safety and construction services and other businesses. The Alexander Business Corporation works with industry partners.
